Note to Readers: About “いま なんじ?”

This picture book teaches how to ask and understand the time in Japanese.
Each page asks “What time is it now?” and shows what we do at that time of day.
All text is written in hiragana, making it easy for young learners.

Here’s how the text looks when written with kanji:

Spread 1 (Page 1-2)
  • いま なん/じ?:今 何/時?(Ima Nann-ji?)
  • あさ ろく/じ:朝 六/時 (Asa roku-ji)
  • おはよう/ございます(Ohayou-gozaimasu)
Spread 2 (Page 3-4)
  • いま なん/じ?:今 何/時?(Ima Nann-ji?)
  • ひる じゅうに/じ:昼 十二/時 (Hiru juuni-ji)
  • おひる/ごはん/だ :お昼/ご飯/だ(Ohiru-gohan-da)
  • いただき/ます(Itadaki-masu) Note

Note Itadakimasu is a Japanese phrase said before meals to express gratitude—for the food, the people who prepared it, and the life that was taken to make the meal possible. It’s a moment of respect and thankfulness, unique to Japanese dining culture. People often place their hands together in a gesture of prayer when saying it.

Spread 3 (Page 5-6)
  • いま なん/じ?:今 何/時?(Ima Nannji?)
  • ごご さん/じ:午後 三/時 (Gogo san-ji)
  • おやつ/の じかん/だ:おやつの 時間/だ (Oyatsu-no jikan-da)
  • うれしい/な:嬉しい/な(Ureshii-na)
Spread 4 (Page 7-8)
  • いま なん/じ?:今 何/時?(Ima Nann-ji?)
  • よる/の く/じ:夜/の 九/時 (Yoru-no ku-ji)
  • もう ねる じかん :もう 寝る 時間(Mou neru jikan)
  • おやすみ/なさい(Oyasumi-nasai)
