Note to Readers: About “ぼくのかぞく”
This picture book gently shows how a baby is loved by their family. Told from the baby’s point of view, it uses simple, childlike language to share warm everyday moments.
Here’s how the text looks when written with kanji or katakana:
ぼく/の まま：僕/の ママ（boku/no mama）
まんま/が とっても：マンマ/が とっても（manma/ga tottemo） Note 1
おいしい/の：美味しい/の（oishii/no）
Note 1 Manma is a Japanese baby word for food or meals. It’s a gentle, childlike way to talk about eating.
ぼく/の パパ：僕/の パパ（boku/no papa）
たかい/たかーい して：高い/高ーい して（takai/taka-i shite）
あそんで くれる：遊んで くれる（asonde kureru）
ぼく/の ばぁば：僕/の バーバ（boku/no baaba） Note 2
いつも にこにこ：いつも ニコニコ（itsumo nikoniko）Note 3
わらって くれる：笑って くれる（waratte kureru）
Note 2 Baaba is a Japanese word for “grandma.” It’s a sweet and affectionate way that young children often use to refer to their own grandmother. Unlike more formal terms, baaba is warm, familiar, and full of love.
Note 3 Niconico is a Japanese word that describes someone smiling happily or cheerfully. It’s part of a unique style in Japanese where short, repeated sounds are used to express actions or feelings in a gentle, playful way.
ぼく/の じぃじ：僕/の ジージ（boku/no jiiji） Note 4
やさしく なでなで：優しく ナデナデ（yasasiku nadenade） Note 5
して/くれる：（shite/kureru）
Note 4 Jiiji is similar to baaba—a warm and affectionate way for young children to refer to their grandpa.
Note 5 Nadenade is a Japanese word that describes gently stroking or patting someone—often a child, pet, or doll—with affection. Like niconico, it’s part of a unique Japanese style of using short, repeated sounds to express actions in a soft and playful way.
