This picture book introduces the hiragana letters from “Ma” to “N” through illustrations inspired by familiar things for children or uniquely Japanese motifs.
Here’s how the text looks when written with kanji or katakana:
- まめ：マメ、豆（mame）
- みかん：ミカン、蜜柑（mikan）
- むぎ/ちゃ：麦/茶（mugi/cha）
- め：目（me）
- もも：モモ、桃（momo）
- やかん：ヤカン（yakan）
- ゆび：指（yubi）
- ようかん：羊羹（youkan） Note 1
- らっきょう：ラッキョウ（rakkkyou） Note 2
- りぼん：リボン（ribon）

Note 1
A Youkan is a traditional Japanese sweet made from red bean paste, sugar, and agar. It’s firm, smooth, and often enjoyed in small slices with green tea.

Rakkyo are small, crunchy pickled bulbs often served with Japanese curry. Their crisp texture and sweet vinegar flavor make them a unique part of Japan’s food culture.
